Solar power grants were something that you may have heard about in the past, with government grants for installing solar panels a way of pushing renewable energy at a time when it wasn’t an approach that was as popular with the wider public. As times have changed, the popularity of solar panel systems has increased significantly, and as a result there are no longer solar panels grants from the government.

Despite there no longer being government grants for solar power available to UK homeowners, the government does offer a fantastic feed-in tariff, which allows those with solar panel systems installed to sell any surplus energy created, back to the Grid. This approach ensures that if you rely on solar power, you are not only lowering your own energy bills, but also potentially making money from helping to power other homes when you have a surplus.

The old rent-a-roof, solar power grants were a common sight at one time, with companies offering to rent your roof space for 25-year periods at a time in order to gain from the Feed-in-Tariff that the government offers. You wouldn’t have to pay towards the cost of the solar panel installation or the maintenance, and would benefit from the use of solar power, but the payments for Feed-in-Tariff would be kept by the company installing.

Since the Feed-in-Tariff payments were cut significantly (by 64%) in 2016, free solar panels are no longer a viable option for companies, but they are still hugely appealing to customers looking for a long-term way to control energy consumption, save money and the environment at the same time.

Between 2013 and 2015,grants for installing solar panels were available. The Government policy (the Green Deal) was launched as a way of assisting homeowners in making amendments to their homes to make them more energy efficient, helping to cut energy bills in the process. Solar panels grants would provide a loan to cover the cost of solar panel installation, with flexible repayments from 10-25 years coming from the reduction in monthly energy bills. Since 2015, this policy has been scrapped unfortunately, but what is still in place is the Feed-in-Tariff, which is available to UK homeowners until April 2019.

With the price of solar panel installation proving much more affordable to households in recent years, the Feed-in-Tariff offers a chance to make an additional return on your investment. The Feed-in-Tariff is a way of rewarding homeowners who could have been receiving solar power grants in the past, those looking to make the most of renewable energy.

How it works is that you get paid for the electricity you produce from the solar panel system installed at your property. For every kWh of electricity that you use as part of the Generation Tariff you receive a set amount, but you will also be paid for every kWh of electricity of surplus energy that you sell back to the National Grid in order to help power other households. This is the Export Tariff.

As an alternative to the old grants for installing solar panels, the Feed-in-Tariff is a great scheme that applies for 20-years and offers great return on investment. On average, a household utilising the Feed-in-Tariff can expect to earn anywhere between £1,800 and £7,500 over the course of 25 years, depending on the number of solar panels installed at the property.

The Government has decided that once we reach April 2019, the Feed-in-Tariff will be scrapped, with the rate for any new applicants being reduced every 3-months in the build up to this. You are guaranteed to receive payments for 20 years if you sign up to the Feed-in-Tariff prior to the current April 2019 cut off point for the scheme.

What this all means, is that right now is the perfect time to end your search for solar power grants and speak to a member of the Moixa team about taking advantage of our solar panels and domestic solar battery systems that help you to maximise the potential of the Feed-in-Tariff, whilst cutting energy bills and reducing your carbon footprint at the same time.

You may have come here looking for information on how to acquire government grants for solar power, but instead you can see the real and long-term benefits to installing solar power and joining our GridShare programme. You’ll be making even more money, on top of the huge annual savings on your energy bills, by selling surplus energy back to the National Grid, at the same time reducing the need to burn fossil fuels.

You might not be able to take advantage of solar panels grants anymore, but with the addition of a solar battery alongside your solar panel installation, you can see real long-term benefits. You’ll not only have access to solar power to charge your home during the day, but you will also be able to charge the battery to either power your home when the sun goes down, or as mentioned above, sell back surplus energy to the National Grid and make even more money on top of your significantly reduced annual energy bills.

By using the Moixa Smart Battery, which we provide as part of our solar panel service in the UK, any surplus energy that is stored can be sold back to the National Grid through our GridShare programme, with you receiving a share of the profits. What makes it even better, is that once you have signed up, we do all the work, selling the energy, collecting the payments, and then providing you with your share of the profits on an annual basis.
